At Insight Finance Solutions Ltd, we understand that tax changes can feel daunting, particularly when new systems come into place. With Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax starting in April 2026, many sole traders and landlords will soon receive letters from HMRC confirming that they must comply.
Here is a clear overview of what is happening, what HMRC expects, and why our clients can feel completely reassured.
Who Will Receive HMRC’s First Letters?
HMRC has begun sending the first round of notification letters to sole traders and landlords who filed their 2024/25 Self Assessment return early, before the end of August 2025.
These letters are being sent to individuals whose return shows more than £50,000 of gross income from self-employment or property. If this applies to you, HMRC will confirm that you are required to follow Making Tax Digital rules from April 2026.
Further letters will be sent between late 2025 and early 2026 as more people file their 2024/25 tax returns.
What Does HMRC Expect From Taxpayers?
Although HMRC is sending out these letters, it is still the taxpayer’s responsibility to:
-
Check whether they need to comply with MTD for Income Tax.
-
Sign up for the MTD system if required.
Even if someone believes they fall within the MTD rules and has not received a letter, they are still expected to sign up.
Our Clients Are Already Prepared for MTD
For clients of Insight Finance Solutions Ltd, there is no need for concern. We have been preparing for MTD for a long time and already use the digital systems that will be required from 2026, including Xero and the relevant bookkeeping processes.
This means:
- You will not experience major changes.
- You will not need to learn new systems.
- Your current way of working with us already meets the new requirements.
- When MTD goes live, there will be no noticeable difference to your day-to-day processes.
Because we operate using fully digital systems, our clients are already aligned with what HMRC will expect from April 2026.
Why We Are Not Waiting for HMRC Letters
HMRC has chosen not to copy agents into these letters, so accountants are not automatically informed. For this reason, we take a proactive approach and stay fully informed about the clients who fall within the new rules.
If you are a client and receive a letter, simply forward it to us. We already know who will be included in MTD and we are managing the transition in the background.
Even if you do not receive a letter immediately, you are still fully covered. We monitor all updates, review the requirements, and have already put the necessary systems in place.
What Happens Next?
If you are already an Insight client, very little needs to change. We will continue managing your bookkeeping and digital records, ensuring complete compliance long before the April 2026 deadline.
If you are not yet a client and would like support ahead of MTD, this is an ideal time to put proper systems in place.
